I told you they are after me!

Everyone’s always accusing me of being paranoid, I try to remind them its not paranoia when they REALLY are after you but they just done listen

In any event, my father just told me about a scam that is targeting First Technology Credit Union members (think Microsoft and Intel employees).

First Tech has recently learned that fraudulent phone calls and subsequent voicemails are being placed to random phone numbers surrounding First Tech branches in the hopes of reaching First Tech members. The voicemail asks the recipient to dial an 800 number and enter their 16-digit card number. The phone calls indicate that the caller is from First Tech Credit Union, but these phone calls are fraudulent. Learn More.

I have been meaning to write about this sort of attack for some time, there is this very cool open source PBX project called Asterisk, with this you can do all kinds of very cool things but like many things in life it too can be used for Evil (yes, capital E); using this platform an attacker can with very low costs and moderate technical understanding build a framework that can call out people en-mass to launch attacks just like this.

It’s a interesting trend if nothing else.
