Updated version of MCE ad-in "My Netflix" availible...

Back in 2004 I wrote a Media Center Ad-In I called "My Netflix" (Original eh?), in any event I have not been a Netflix subscriber in a long time and therefore did not continue maintaining the ad-in; well the other day a MitchSchaft  contacted me asking me to fix one issue with it, and as luck would have it his timing was alright as I needed a diversion to maintain my sanity so went ahead and fixed it up.

It turned out there was a lot more than one thing wrong (isn't that always the way) and I spent most of today fixing it up; as for the errata for this release:

  • It works on VISTA now, you have to manually install it but I did confirm it works.
  • All images are shown now, site changes at Netflix broke this.
  • Better support for box sets and dual disk sets, previously these did not show cover art.
  • NEW Added support for "Move To Top" of queue.
  • Updates the text to be more consistent with the current Netflix site.
  • Correct data now shows up for the Recent Activity page, site changes at Netflix broke this.
  • Clean data is now shown for the movie description, site changes at Netflix broke this.
  • Fixed the login page to work with keyboards better.
  • Miscellaneous bug fixes.

I did not re-do the installer as I don't have Visual Studio installed and can't seem to find my DVDs for it but MCE 2005 users can use the existing installer and just update the My Netflix "Program Files" folder with the latest bits, VISTA users will have to manually do the install (check the "Read Me" in the package).

Update for MCE 2005 and bits for VISTA: http://www.unmitigatedrisk.com/mce/mynetflixupdate.zip

I still don't subscribe to Netflix so I don't expect to spend any more time on this, but if there are minor issues and I have the time I will try to take care of them.

I was curious if you think it's easily possible to add the Watch it Now feature in Netflix to MCE?
thanks!

I only casually looked at this but it looks like they do this with ActiveX; thus it should be fairly easy (a day or so of work for someone very familiar with HMTL) to get this working.

There would be tons of grateful people if you could add a Watch It Now feature. Thanks for the work you've already put into this project.

Ryan, if you're looking to back slowly away from this project, would you consider putting the source and latest installer up on Codeplex, and adding any of the interested dev-minded types to the project so they can take the codebase further? Heck, I'm sure you could even find a volunteer to use their Visual Studio to upload the source, and build an installer, if you're not yet equipped. :)

I really have not worked on this project in any significat capacity in several years; I frequently consider the idea of getting into it again but my work really doesnt leave time for it anymore.

As for codeplex, the sourceis posted here and it was licensed under a MS shared source license so folks could take it and do with it as they please.

If I do end up having time my intention would be to re-write as a MCML add-in, posibly tightly integrating with My Movies and being generalized accross many services.

This is a great plugin with a bug that make it unusable for me. For example, I can not Add a movie to the cue; I get an error that just says "Could not move movie to top of cue."

That said, this is a GREAT concept and a very decent implementation. I use MCE 2005 and enjoy it very much and your blog has been very helpful. If you do ever update this plugin, please post it!

Thanks for your hard work.

You did not leave a email so I cant respond directly but did you run the latest version (from a few months ago) posted here?

Many folks are using it fine, check out TGB for a support thread.

Its posible netflix changed their site again, if so the screen scraping logic in the add-in may not work anymore, but as of now your the only one so I am going to assume its your running an old version or their is something special in your queue causing the problem (sometimes netflix does one off odities in the items in a queue).

Good luck.
