What a wonderful idea, a NAS in a Fireproof safe...

I was stumbling around the web today and I ran across a article on using Power-line networking and putting a small NAS in a Fireproof safe, I think this is a wonderful idea and I think I will do it at some point in the future.

In-fact I am almost surprised there is not such a product out there already!

Those who read my blog regularly or know me personally have likely heard me ramble on about my HUGE NAS in the garage, its a 16 bay SATA II chassis with 12 750GB Seagate drives  in it (would love to fill in the remaining slots BTW, send me money ).

This works great for my media but that system would certainly fail if it the house were to catch on fire, a small RAID 0 NAS in a safe would allow me to keep my important electronic documents and paper documents protected from the same risks how cool!

[Update 10/01/2007 3:00PM]  Looks like Francis Ford Coppola could benefit from a solution like this, check this out: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7019644.stm

i too stumbled upon the link above as well as your blog about the fireproof nas. There is a company in California that does make fireproof and waterproof data storage hardware in either a NAS or USB external hard drive version. They are called ioSafe (I assume that means (input/output safe).

Somewhat pricey for just my digital photos, but for a business it seems like a solid product. I noticed that the devices also come with a data recovery service as part of the warranty which is pretty awesome.

Anyway, thought you would like to know.

Yes, these are very cool (http://iosafe.com/) I had heard such products existed but had not ran across any.

That being said your right, way overkill for a home user; and that’s coming from a guy with a big-ol-nas in his garage already.

The thing I really liked about the idea of the NAS in a fireproof safe was that it allowed me to apply similar management practices to my physical records as my logical/electronic ones.

I really think we will see a media safe of some sort in the not-so-distant future that targets this market; I am sure there is one.
